FIEGE celebrates its 150th anniversary
In 1873, Joan Joseph Fiege, then a farmer, founded a small haulage business in Greven in Westphalia. Fast forward 150 years, and FIEGE has become an international logistics company with a workforce of more than 23,000 people working in 16 countries that pursues – next to its core activity, contract logistics – also real estate, ventures, and digital services. Despite ongoing growth for one and a half centuries, the FIEGE family business has maintained its values as well as a special attachment to their home region.
150 years together in motion: On Wednesday, the logistics company FIEGE started with celebrations for its 150th company anniversary. Selected guests from local politics as well as all employees working there were invited to a small festive event at the Greven-based company headquarters.
“Our 150th anniversary is a special milestone to celebrate in the history of our company. We realise this is a privilege, and anything but a given. On this occasion, we wish to shine the spotlight on our 23,000 colleagues around the world, as they are the ones who make this team achievement possible in the first place. We wish to express our gratitude to them – because without them, we would not be where we are today”, says Felix Fiege who with his cousin, Jens Fiege is the fifth generation to manage the family business today. Jens Fiege adds: “Our relationships with our clients are more like partnerships, many of which have existed for decades now. They also form a key element of our long history. On the occasion of our anniversary, we would therefore like to thank not only our team, but also our customers and partners from the bottom of our hearts!"
The logistics company FIEGE was formed in 1873 as a haulage company in Greven in Westphalia. In the early years, the farmer, Joan Joseph Fiege ran small errands and transported coal with his horse-drawn cart. Following Joan Joseph Fiege’s death in 1905, his son, Josef Fiege kept the business going. After his son, Josef Fiege Jnr. acquired a first truck in the 1920s, the company ventured into long-haul transport, ringing in a first strong growth phase. After the untimely death of Josef Fiege Jnr. in 1959 caused by an accident, his sister, Anne Fischbach née Fiege and her husband, Karl took charge of further advancing the constantly growing forwarding business.
Roughly a decade later, in 1967, Josef Fiege’s son, Heinz Fiege joined the company and in 1973 brought his brother, Dr. Hugo Fiege on board. As the fourth generation at FIEGE, the two siblings triggered the pioneering development of the company, moving it from a forwarding enterprise towards contract logistics. In the 1990s, they were awarded the German Logistics Prize (1992) and the accolade as Eco-manager of the Year (1996) for their pioneering achievements. In 1998, they formed the Josef Fiege Stiftung, a foundation in honour of their deceased father which to this day supports social projects and institutions that are committed to the well-being of society and nature. In 2014, Heinz Fiege and Dr. Hugo Fiege passed the reins to their sons, Jens Fiege and Felix Fiege who have been spearheading the family business in the capacity of Co-CEOs ever since.
In 2023, 150 years following its formation, FIEGE is one of Europe’s most innovative logistics providers in Europe, offering cross-sector, modular solutions in logistics, real estate, ventures and digital services. Jens Fiege tells us: “Our roots are in Greven. This is where everything began. In the meantime, we are also present at 130 locations and in 16 countries, from Europe all the way to Asia. That is what we wish to celebrate under the headline ‘150 years together in motion’ with our colleagues, our partners, and our clients.” And Felix Fiege explains: “During our anniversary year, we will naturally be looking back at our company’s past. However, we also wish to look forward to the challenges and the goals that lie ahead. Because, if there is one thing that has defined us throughout our long history, then most and for all the fact that we, as a company, have time and again reinvented ourselves and always remained open to change. That was our path – and that will remain our path.”
