FIEGE creates guidelines for use of artificial intelligence
The FIEGE Group is relying increasingly on artificial intelligence for its business units. The Greven-based logistics company has now created a default framework to secure the conscientious use of AI-based technology across the Group.
Leading the way responsibly: FIEGE has introduced five self-accountability guidelines which are to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company. The guidelines are informed by the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act and focus on such principles as explainability, transparency, fairness, data protection and robustness. The aim is to apply AI-based technology in line with general ethical standards and exclusively in accordance with the values of the 150-year-old, fifth-generation family business.
Kenza Ait Si Abbou, Executive Board Director and CTO at FIEGE explains: “Artificial intelligence has the potential to radically change our society. Next to AI’s extremely important positive effects for us, this new technology also comes with risks that we need to take into consideration. It is therefore up to us to use AI within designated areas of responsibilities and only with a benefit for our employees, our clients and partners as well as all stakeholders. Our new AI guidelines empower us to live up to this responsibility.”
The guidelines are to ensure that decisions based on algorithms and artificial intelligence are transparent and can be explained. “The central requirement here is transparency, which is essential in creating the necessary trust. All users need to be aware of the specific areas and applications where AI is employed”, Ait Si Abbou says. It is equally essential that, with support from AI, fair decisions only are taken. It is paramount to engage technology that is compliant with data protection laws and absolutely robust against any form of manipulation. Ait Si Abbou emphasises: “We will only consider using applications that meet these five principles. This is how we ensure actual support for our colleagues with their day-to-day work and add dependable value for our clients.”
