Double the space: FIEGE expands logistics centre in Emmerich

The Greven-based family business is adding 32,000 square metres of logistics space to its Lower Rhine facility. The start is scheduled for January 2023. The key tenant has already been named.

The logistics provider Fiege is expanding its facility in Emmerich am Rhein. An additional 32,000 square metres dedicated to logistics will be created in the Hanseatic City near the German-Dutch border in close proximity to Emmerich’s container port by January 2023. The initial building phase which is equally comprised of 32,000 square metres of logistics space was completed in autumn 2019, and the second phase is now set to begin. Fiege will be erecting a further four hall bays in Emmerich that will connect with the part of the logistics centre that has already been built. In addition, a good 1,000 square metres will be constructed to accommodate offices and recreational areas. The project is being implemented by Fiege Real Estate.

“Emmerich is ideal due to its central location in Europe, its excellent access to the A3 motorway and more importantly, due to its proximity to the container port, making it perfect for us as a logistics company and especially also for our clients”, says Markus Pohle, Fiege Branch Manager who celebrated the official topping out ceremony for the enlargement on Tuesday. “It’s both consistent and logical for us to expand our logistics centre here, and we are quite thrilled to be very much on schedule at the moment.”

Overall, the family business Fiege, which will be celebrating its 150th anniversary next year, will be creating around 80 new jobs in Emmerich within the industrial and commercial sector. And one key tenant has already been named for the new logistics space currently undergoing construction: Wenko from Hilden which markets all things bathroom, kitchen, laundry as well as home & living will occupy a large part of the new multi-user site.

Fiege is once again placing great value on sustainability with the add-on to the logistics centre by building in accordance with the Gold Standard from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Thoralf Schuster, Managing Director Fiege Real Estate explains: “With the use of photovoltaic systems we will be generating solar power for captive use in Emmerich in the future while also feeding electricity directly into the public grid. At the same time, we are relying on high-efficiency LED lighting systems, a greywater tank to irrigate the green areas, and a perfect charging infrastructure for electric mobility. And thanks to a VRF system, we will completely do away with heating with gas. This brings us yet another step closer towards our goal of becoming a zero emissions company as fast as possible.”
