FIEGE builds new logistics centre near Leipzig
The Greven-based logistics company FIEGE is developing a multi-user centre in Borna in the district of Leipzig. Excavations for the ultra-modern property, which will provide approximately 38,000 square metres of logistics space for customers from various industries, has been underway since September.
The FIEGE Group has started construction work on its new logistics centre in Borna. To the south-east of Leipzig, the contract logistics expert is building a multi-user property on a site of almost 80,000 square metres. In the middle of the dynamic Leipzig/Halle logistics region, a good 38,000 square metres of logistics space and additional administrative, office and social rooms are being built in four units. Thanks to a warehouse floor with a WGK-3 seal, the logistics centre meets the requirements for the storage of hazardous goods. The project will be executed by FIEGE Real Estate and is scheduled for completion in late summer 2025.
Sustainability is at the centre of the planning process - both in terms of the building materials and the equipment. For example, the logistics centre will partly feature an innovative timber façade system and resource-saving mineral wool insulation. The building will be heated by air-to-water heat pumps and illuminated by high-efficiency LED lighting. Kai Alfermann, who together with Thoralf Schuster and Nikolaus von Blomberg is responsible for FIEGE Real Estate as Managing Director, explains: “As with all our developments, in Borna we are also guided by the latest construction and environmental standards. Our aim is to set new standards in terms of sustainability with our logistics properties and thus contribute to climate change.”
With consideration for the surrounding landscape, the logistics service provider has developed a biodiversity concept for its construction project. For energy production, FIEGE is fitting the hall rooftop with two high-performance photovoltaic systems. Around 10,000 solar panels with a total output of 4,590 kilowatt peak are projected, some of which will cover the building's own requirements. With the completion of the logistics centre, 40 charging stations for electric cars will be available, the number of which can be increased to 80 if required. In addition, FIEGE uses automated building management systems and monitoring tools to continuously optimise energy consumption.
With the construction project in Borna, FIEGE is aiming for the EG-40 as well as the Gold Standard (2023 version) of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Alfermann adds: “The many measures in the area of Energy Solutions - from PV systems to green heat to prospective storage solutions - contribute to developing our logistics properties into small sustainable power plants. Our new logistics centre in Borna fits in seamlessly with this.”
