FIEGE’s PV system in Barleben goes online

The logistics company FIEGE has fitted its healthcare location in Barleben with a high-output photovoltaic system. The system will produce roughly two gigawatt hours of power annually, which corresponds to the electricity consumed by about 580 households.

The FIEGE Group has put into operation a PV system on the rooftop of its multi-user centre in Barleben. The unit with a total output of 2,750 kilowatt peak is so far one of the largest Group-wide. The system is to supply green energy not only for the location which is dedicated to the pharmaceutical industry, but will feed any surplus power produced into the public grid. The roughly 7,000 PV panels installed on a rooftop area of around 30,000 square metres have been up and running since June.

“Photovoltaic systems are one of the most powerful levers to ensure the successful turnaround in energy policy. Thanks to the extensive rooftop space at our logistics centres, our facilities offer a vast potential for generating renewable energy”, says Mareike Tenkleve, project manager at FIEGE Real Estate. “The electricity produced in this manner covers the energy consumption on site, allowing the location in Barleben to operate at times even self-sufficiently. Moreover, we feed any surplus in energy into the public grid.” Beyond this, FIEGE is reviewing the possibility of making the power also available to other branches in the long run via so-called Offsite Power Purchase Agreements (PPA).

Powered by the sun: FIEGE has put into operation a PV system on the rooftop of the logistics centre in Barleben which will supply roughly two gigawatt hours of green energy annually.

Next to the PV system, the ultra-modern building is fitted with efficient LED lights, VRV air-source heat pumps and a smart charging infrastructure. The logistics centre therefore meets the requirements of the Platinum Certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Kai Alfermann, Managing Director of the FIEGE Real Estate business unit, explains: “The development of energy-efficient properties forms a key element of our sustainability strategy and is second nature to us. In this context, we are continually working on turning our logistics centres into small solar power plants. We are greatly looking forward to adding a new PV system, to continue along this path and to make our beacon project in Barleben even more sustainable.”

FIEGE’s logistics centre north of Magdeburg went live at the beginning of 2023 and is one of the most sustainable pharma-only locations within the Group and beyond. Thanks to various temperature-controlled areas and a prescription drugs storage, the multi-user centre is perfectly suited to handle medical equipment, sensitive pharmaceutical products as well as hazardous substances.
